GUNCRAZY: Letting God Sort ‘Em Out

BY JOSEPH GAMBARDELLO OF THE INQUIRER An 18-year-old man was shot and fatally wounded yesterday afternoon outside a McDonald’s restaurant in West Oak Lane. Detectives were seeking the killer and a motive in the 1:17 p.m. shooting in the 2200 block of Stenton Avenue. The victim, not immediately identified, was taken with a stomach wound to Albert Einstein Medical Center and died at 2:10 p.m.It was the second fatal shooting of the day as the number of homicides in the city grew to 95.

At 3:12 a.m., a 29-year-old man was shot multiple times in the chest in the 1300 block of West Jerome Street in Hunting Park, police said. Mar Kennedy of the 3200 block of North Carlisle Street in Tioga died at Temple University Hospital at 4:02 a.m. Police were seeking the killer in that case as well.

The homicide count for the day included the death after midnight of a man who had been shot at least four times in the shoulder, arm and back about 11:40 p.m. Sunday in the 3400 block of North 17th Street in Tioga. The victim,gunnutjesus.jpg Javon Smith, lived nearby in the 3500 block of North 17th.

Police also were investigating two shootings in less than 24 hours in which three children were wounded. In the latest incident, a 2-year-old boy was shot in the arm about 1:30 p.m. in the 2200 block of Fernon Street in Point Breeze. The child was reported in stable condition at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Initial police reports indicated he may have been accidentally wounded by his mother.

Detectives in the meantime blamed stray gunfire in the wounding of two sisters — ages 9 and 13 — as they returned home about 5:30 p.m. Sunday from a trip to the zoo with their father. The girls, each hit in an arm as they got out of a car in the 1500 block of South Etting Street in South Philadelphia, were also treated at Children’s Hospital, police said. Detectives were looking for those who fired the shots.
