RELATED: The controversy over Missouri GOP Congressman Todd Akin‘s recent “legitimate rape” comment brought to mind a campaign of my former boss, Texas Gov. Ann Richards. It’s unclear what affect Akin’s statement will have in his race against U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo. But in Richards’ successful campaign for governor, which I worked on in 1989 and 1990, an insidious rape comment from her male opponent may have been the deciding factor in her victory. I will never forget the weekend when Clayton Williams, a multimillionaire businessman who had never sought public office, invited a group of reporters to his West Texas ranch. Standing around a camp fire on a rainy day, Williams revealed an unattractive side of his character by making a joke comparing rape to bad weather. “If it’s inevitable, just relax and enjoy it,” Williams said. I was the staffer in the campaign headquarters that Saturday night who fielded the call from a woman TV reporter who had been present when Williams put his foot in his mouth. The reporter asked, “Does Treasurer Richards care to comment about Mr. Williams’ rape joke?” I told her I would get back to her. MORE
