palinnope.jpgPOLITICO: The Philadelphia Flyers’ decision to invite self-described hockey mom Sarah Palin to drop the ceremonial first puck at the team’s home opener on Saturday night is prompting head-scratching in the worlds of sports and politics. For Republicans — who are clinging to diminishing hopes that Palin and her running mate, John McCain, can carry Pennsylvania — a less-than-warm welcome from the notoriously unruly Philly fans could be embarrassing to the GOP ticket. A cascade of boos for Palin might also prove to be a PR nightmare for the Flyers, reinforcing yet again Philly fans’ reputation for boorishness, and focusing unwanted attention on the motives of the teams’ managing partner, big GOP donor Ed Snider.  “I don’t think it is a good idea to mix politics and sports. Half the fans will disagree with what you say or do,” said Ted Leonsis, owner of the Washington Capitals, a conference rival of the Flyers. Leonsis, who in the primary gave maximum contributions to both Palin’s running mate and his Democratic rival Barack Obama, said if he invited a candidate in a looming election to appear at a Caps-related event, “I would be sure to give both sides equal time.”  And he added, “I am surprised that the candidate would go on the ice in Philly — Philly fans threw snowballs at Santa Claus and booed Beyonce because she was wearing a Michael Jordan dress. This is dangerous territory.” MORE

Spectacor Sports Baron Ed Snider Is Funding The Movement To Save The War

So in looking into this so-called Freedom’s Watch, we came across this donor’s list on The Politico, which had a name on it that caught our eye:

“The donors include Sembler; Anthony Gioia, a Buffalo businessman who was Bush’s ambassador toedsnidertweaked.jpg Malta; Kevin Moley, who was Bush’s ambassador to the U.S. Mission to the United Nations in Geneva; Howard Leach, a former Republican National Committee finance chairman who was Bush’s ambassador to France; Dr. John Templeton of Pennsylvania, chairman and president of the John Templeton Foundation; Ed Snider, chairman of Comcast Spectacor, the huge Philadelphia sports and entertainment firm; Sheldon Adelson, chairman of the Las Vegas Sands Corp. and ranked by Forbes magazine as the third-wealthiest American; and Richard Fox, who is chairman of the Jewish Policy Center and was Pennsylvania State Chairman of the Reagan/Bush campaign in 1980.”

And then there’s this:

“Opponents of the war say they have uncovered Freedom’s Watch buys in 33 television markets, from Albuquerque, N.M., to Bangor, Maine, to Little Rock, Ark. In many cases, according to the opponents’ tally, the advertisements will air in the districts or home states of Republican comcastic3s.gifincumbents who have wavered in their support for the administration on Iraq. The two biggest expenditures appeared to be in Philadelphia and Washington. There are smaller ad buys in places like Bend, Ore. Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Ore.), who faces a tough race, was among the first GOP senators to call for an end to the war.”

And people wonder why the cable bill is so high.

P.S. This seems like something the newspapers should be writing about, instead of gee-whiz stories about the ginormous skyscraper Comcast built on a bed of corporate welfare tax breaks.

ANTI-WAR.COM: “The American people are not going to be won over by a cabal of money-laden ideologues who use the suffering of others to promote and ensure yet more suffering. The judgement of the majority is clear, and the margin of the antiwar movement’s victory in the battle for public opinion is growing by the day: Americans oppose this war, and want it to end as soon as possible. No amount of scare-mongering and slick appeals to primitive emotions are going to revive the war hysteria of the immediate post-9/11 period. Nothing short of another 9/11 will accomplish that  which is why we have the more honest neocons, like Stu Bykofsky, openly pining for just that.”
