I'd like to clarify something. Throughout your article, what you connote as Philly's "black" Muslim community is completely different today, compared to how it was in the 60's, 70's, and even the 80's; which was the heyday of black, nationalistic, separatists movements like the Nation of Islam, the Moorish Science Temple, and the Ansarullaah community etc. As Allaah increased our knowledge by exposing us to true Islaamic scholars in Saudi Arabia, we learned that groups like the ones mentioned above were not even Muslims. Because of there violation of the correct, and fixed Islaamic creed, we discovered that they are actually satanic cults that use Islaamic names and terminology, but oppose Islaamic creed at the most fundamental level

I have to say that while the masjid's community does have many many problems, the chilly reception you received has less to do with race in this day and age and more to do with your status as a non-Muslim. In general, Muslim communities tend to see non-Muslims in one of two fashions.....1)a possible threat to our ideals/community or 2)possible converts. In particular, we regard anybody connected to the media as being potential threats because we don't know what type of spin the stories will take.

As a Muslim and a journalist I have had to both confront those tendencies in myself and in others. Still, a well written article.

The article is very informative but I think the title is bit misleading maybe stereotypical. The masjid(mosque) is a multi ethnic atmosphere. The title of your article might lead people to think it is something similar to nationalistic group like the "nation of islam" and others, which arent a part of islam. Islam is a religion for ALL races and ALL people. The majority of the community is composed of african ameircans but we also have many arabs, hispanics, whites, indo pakistanian and asians .

Thank you Mr. Deeney. This article, as well as the one you wrote in the City Paper, is excellent. I am a member of this community and by writing these articles you are doing a great service to the Muslims in Philadelphia, specifically the ones in Germantown, by informing the world of some the issues that may exist in our community. Yes, sometimes it does seem that we are isolated and separated from mainstream America. Because of this, people quite often fall back on stereotypes to define people who they do not know about. So, I appreciate your efforts to try and inform the masses of what life as a Muslim in East Germantown is really like.

Thank you,
