There is a difference between saying “what if a white person…” and “what if a black person…” The difference is the relationship between two races. While one race has a history of denigrating black society and placing them in a certain place in society, the same is not true for white people. Thus, it is a more complicated issue than addressed.

I agree that the whole “What if Hilary said….” line of thinking plays no part in this. What if she did say it and it also didn’t really matter. What Obama was trying to deal with in that speech, directly and plainly, was well worth any wordsplitting. And what if there is a typical white person’s reaction to the situation he described regarding his grandmother, and what if it in any way applies to any one of us? Sweeping the real issues of racism under the carpet and simply making bold gestures, like public denouncements, haven’t been that successful in moving forward, have they?
