I know it's been years since any of the above were posted, but it never crossed my mind to check on any 'comments' since this article was posted. I just happened across it again as I was doing research on the Rockin' Bricks for the Great Cataloging Project. In response, I didn't write the headline, with was originally titled "D.I.Y." That was the segment it ran in in my pamphlet back when. It was a short series of pieces on seemingly obscure singles that for all intents and purposes were d.i.y. releases, even though they might have been released by someone else, that I had always loved. The single was released on a Philadelphia based label, Lee Paris & Steve Pross's Go-Go. My misremembering the name of Casey's store was just another bout, one of many, of my senility.

This stuff is fascinating. I grew up and went to school with both Pete Tomlinson and Joe Hosey. I would really like to contact Pete. I have lived in NM since 1975 and missed all this music.

Of interest is the fact that I, along with Art Marko were the founders of Cheap Thrills Records in New Brunswick NJ..a place which for years was the centerpiece (along with the Melody and the Court Taverns) of the New Brunswick music scene.
In addition to selling and distributing records ( by the Punsters, The Rockin Bricks,
The Smithereens, Ivan Kral's Eastern Block, etc). Artie and myself produced numerous recordings by such illustrious artists as Nico, Timothy Leary, Count Five, and others. Those indeed were great days! I'd love to hear from Pete Tomlinson!!

I saw The Shades open for The Police at the Walnut Street Theatre in Philly in 1979. Their bass player at the time was playing an Antigua Fender P-Bass. I instantly fell in love with the color and bought one a few weeks later. It's still my main bass to this day. I also bought their single the day after the show. Always thought "Hello Mr. Johnson" was the better song, but that's just my taste. Thanks for posting the live stuff. Great to hear them again!

GUYS, The Shades may have played a lot of shows in Philly at The Hot Club, but their 2 years every Thursday Night stint at City Gardens makes them a TRENTON BAND ! Plus, add in 2 years prior to the City Gardens gigs a weekly gig as well at Brothers Saloon, too

Good story - I knew most all the people mentioned. I was bass player in Shot In The Head and also, with Pete Tomlinson, later with Fran Kowalski and Keith Csolak in BIG HELP! We played a lot of gigs with the dBs, (with the other Pete and Chris). Nobody seems to remember Big Help! We later stole Joe Hosey back for The Rockin' Bricks. (1980-1984).

thanks

For a time The Shades were the house band at Philadelphia's Hot Club, and were booked by Hot Club owner David Carroll. So during that period, they were essentially a Philadelphia band, and played in Philly more than anywhere else.

The same thing happened with pre-Stray Cats band The Bloodless Pharaohs. They were from even farther away (Long Island), but played here all the time and would even live for days/weeks at a time in David's apartment above the club. It was during one of their frequent Philly stays that they formed The Top Cats as a side band to play rockabilly covers at Dobb's, and that project was the blueprint for what became The Stray Cats. But I digress.
